TEST POST — R-Blade vs. R-Shade: Which Is Right for Your Space? | Breslow Design & Build

This is a test post used to verify the blog publishing workflow end-to-end. The content below exercises every element our blog template supports — headings, body copy, lists, blockquotes, and the gold-accent tip callout — so you can confirm the styling renders correctly before publishing real content.

Two of the most common questions homeowners ask during a Breslow design consultation: do I need a louvered roof, or just retractable screens? The answer depends entirely on what you’re trying to control — the sun above you, or the wind and bugs around you.

R-Blade™: Overhead Climate Control

R-Blade is Azenco’s motorized louvered roof system. Aluminum blades rotate from fully open (vertical) to fully closed (horizontal) on a precision rack-and-pinion drive. When closed, the blades form a watertight roof with integrated drainage running through the support columns.

R-Shade™: Lateral Privacy & Wind Block

R-Shade is Azenco’s motorized retractable screen system — vertical fabric panels that drop from a concealed cassette to enclose the perimeter of a structure. They run in sealed zip-track channels and can be deployed independently per side.

Most Common Build The majority of our motorized pergola projects pair R-Blade overhead with R-Shade on two or three sides. This combination gives the homeowner full control of both the roof and the perimeter — a true four-season outdoor room.

How to Decide

Start with the question: what’s currently keeping you indoors?

If it’s the rain or the midday sun overhead, you want R-Blade. If it’s wind, mosquitoes, or western glare in the evening, you want R-Shade. If it’s all of the above — which is most homeowners — you want both.

Either system can be retrofit to an existing structure, but the integration is cleanest when both are designed into the build from day one. That’s the conversation we have during the design consultation — we measure, look at how you actually use the space, and propose the configuration that fits.

Next Steps

If you’re weighing R-Blade against R-Shade for your project, the easiest next step is a free in-home design consultation. We’ll walk your site, look at sun angles, prevailing wind, and how the space connects to the rest of your home, then put together a custom proposal.
